The memories of Mesopotamian Night 2008 and the celebration of the music of William Daniel is again revived with the following clip from Victor Davoody. Once the DVD of the Mesopotamian Night 2009 is out we will have more clips to celebrate the art, music, and poetry of this Assyrian legend.

Overall the 2009 Mesopotamian Nights Gala concert at the Galo Center for the Arts in Modesto, California, was a success. The program was presented by the Assyrian Aid Society of America (AAS-A) to raise funds for needy Assyrians in Iraq.
With the first half of the program devoted to Assyrian music in the western classical tradition and the second half to Assyrian popular music, there was something for everyone in the audience. In between, the auctioning of Assyrian art gave the crowd not only the opportunity to support Assyrian artists, but also to do its part to help Assyrians in need.
Assyryt Suite No. 1 by French composer Michel Bosc opened the program. Bosc had orchestrated some 20 piano pieces by the Assyrian composer Paulus Khofri into his suite. For this concert, the suite was to have been performed in two 10-piece sets as Assyryt Suites Nos. 1 and 2, at the beginning and then the end of the first half in that order. Because of time constraints, Suite No. 2 was eliminated from the program. Assyryt Suite presented the heart and soul of Khofri’s music with Bosc’s fine orchestral writing.
Bosc was no less successful in his operatic writing with the Overture and Act I of Qateeni Gabbara. Set to a libretto by Tony Khoshaba, this opera in progress is based on the Epic of Qateeni Gabbara by the noted Assyrian writer and composer, the late William Daniel. Although the soloists were not of Assyrian heritage, with Yosip Bet Yosip’s coaching, they delivered a fine performance of the opera in Assyrian.
I was especially impressed with coloratura soprano Shawnette Sulkter, in her role as the Stranger, for her sweet tone and emotional sensitivity. The other soloists were Artistic Director Raeeka Shehabi-Yaghmai, mezzo-soprano, as the Widow; John Bischoff, bass, as Malik Toma; Mathew Edwardsen, tenor, as Qateeni; and Torlef Alika Borsting, baritone, as Giliana. Guest Conductor John Kendall Bailey led the Gottschalk Music Center Orchestra.
Later, in the Duet of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, from John Craton’s opera Gilgamesh, Borsting, as Gilgamesh, and Edwardsen, as Enkidu, delivered strong performances. Also an opera in progress, excerpts from Gilgamesh premiered at the 2008 Mesopotamian Nights gala concert and were well received.
The Mesopotamian Choir Ensemble, prepared by Rev. Samuel Khangaldy, performed songs by Paulus Khofri and Nebu Issabey, in John Craton’s orchestration. These were tender nationalistic songs given a sensitive interpretation by the choir despite an occasional rough edge staying with the orchestra.
Assyrian soprano Lorraine Davis gave a memorable performance of two William Daniel songs orchestrated by John Craton. Davis has a rich and mature voice with a dark and moody thread running through it. This quality, framed in a good sense of phrasing, makes her voice and style ideal for interpreting Assyrian songs. What’s more, she floats comfortably between solo piano and orchestral accompaniment. I would love to see her record a whole range of lovely songs by Khofri, Daniel, Issabey and scores of other Assyrian composers.
The second half was devoted to Assyrian popular music. Lida Lawando’s best effort was her acappella performance, and Emanouel Bet-Younan spotlighted his taste for sensitive lyrics and lush orchestral writing.
I have saved for last what I felt was the highlight of the evening’s musical offering: the overture from the Oratorio Gilgamesh by Reverend Samuel Khangaldy. I might add I was even surprised, although I admit I had never heard Rev. Khangaldy’s music. Some 15 minutes or so in length, this is a marvelous piece of orchestral music in the way it colors the Assyrian themes in brush strokes of European Romantic.
Gilgamesh Oratorio, according to Rev. Khangaldy, will be written in 15 parts, covering the entire epic of Gilgamesh, and will be offered in Assyrian and English versions. I can’t wait to hear the work when it is completed. In the meantime, if I may be so bold, I would like to make a suggestion to Rev. Khangaldy:
Turn this Gilgamesh Oratorio Overture into a symphonic poem and compose a much shorter overture for the oratorio. This gorgeous music has all the elements of a symphonic poem: a one-movement orchestral composition with a program and in a free musical form. Lizt, Tchaikovsky, Smetana, Sibelius and many other composers wrote beautiful symphonic poems. Why not the Assyrian composer Samuel Khangaldy?
I believe Gilgamesh Overture is strong enough to stand on its own, and I can easily hear it soaring in a performance by a major orchestra. I also suggest the overture be included in next year’s performance of Mesopotamian Nights Gala concert.
Not everything was positive in this year’s program, of course, as can be expected from an event of this magnitude. As the master of ceremonies and program music annotator, I felt the first half was too long and exhausting with the amount of music crammed in. That, however, was a minor fault when compared to the excessive number of speeches.
Although delivered by worthy people, I believe the speeches killed the sparkle in the show. They disrupted the tempo and the flow. I have nothing against speeches, whether accepting awards or for worthy causes, but please save them for another time and get on with the show.
I realize these are growing pains for a remarkable attempt in presenting Assyrian music in concert form. I know in future years quality programming that is well paced will be something we Assyrians can be proud of.

Award winning director to produce MN2009 DVD
It is a pleasure to announce that Ms. Carol Lancaster Mingus the director of MJC Department of Television and Film will be producing the DVD for the Mesopotamian Night 2009 concert. Ms. Mingus was present at the event with her large camera crew and recorded the event from different angles and conducted quite a large selection of interviews.
About Carol Lancaster Mingus
Currently an instructor of Television and Film Production at Modesto Junior College, Carol Lancaster Mingus received her BA Degree in Radio and Television from the University of Arizona. Prior to joining the faculty in 1993, Carol served as Senior Coordinating Producer for local programming at KVIE in Sacramento and as a producer-director at KUAT in Tucson, Arizona. In her tenure with PBS she produced and directed a variety local programming and won several awards for her documentaries, promotional campaigns and was nominated for a regional Emmy Award for directing.
Over the last sixteen years Carol has guided the MJC Department of Television and Film into becoming one of the premiere Media Arts Departments in the state. The program offers intense “hands-on” training, and the opportunity to become a staff member of a professional production company. Plankwalker Studios is a full service, on-campus, student run, video production company and under her direction several of their commissioned projects have won national awards for their clients.
Her teaching position combined with the state-of-the-art facilities at Modesto Junior College has enabled Carol to share with her students, her talents and her absolute passion for producing and directing television and film projects. Most recently Carol produced and directed a documentary, San Francisco’s Broken Promise which was accepted into three California Film Festivals and has been featured on KTEH-TV in San Jose and on Free Speech TV on Cable.

Rabi Polous Khofri and the Youth Choir
We received the following article from Dr. Dennis Gelyana. Dr. Gelyana has been a sponsor and supporter of the Mesopotamian Night project in 2008 and 2009. This article is timely as we have only one day to MN2009 concert and that we have revived a glimpse of Rabi Paulus Khofri Choir group with the creation of Mesopotamian Choir Ensemble. This new choir group will perform two Rabi Khofri's songs (Nation Sacrifices and Vacant Nineveh) with the orchestra as well as the Nation song by Rabi Nebu Issabey.
My name is Dennis Gelyana. I had the privilege of being a member of the Assyrian National and Cultural Youth Center (Qhendroun) Choir in 1980s. The Choir was formed by the center’s Fine Arts Committee. The committee requested Rabi Polous Khofri, a distinguished Assyrian musician who conducted the Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic Church of Tehran’s choir, to create and conduct a national Youth Choir. I remember very well the very first meeting, his magnificent optimism, and his interesting and unique way of encouraging the members to learn and spread their musical heritage.
Rabi Khofri was making the practice sessions so appealing that every single member couldn’t wait for another weekly session of practice/class. His home was also always open for the members to see him with any questions, concerns, or comments.
I would like to mention that at that time there were several political/religious/cultural groups among Assyrians in the country that were not getting along with each other. At such a time, he composed a song for the commemoration of the 50th year after the massacre of Simele, in which he declared to all the groups, “the mother nation will not stop crying unless you accept every single one of your people (with different beliefs and ideas) as your brother. (EIMAN KHOOYEDLOUKH BE KOULE BNE OMTOUKH, HEGAH BED BARZI DAMAAD YEMOUKH.)” The same theme and music seems to be completely fitting for the story of our nation at this very moment.
Another event that must be mentioned was a performance in February 1988. At that year, the Office of Religious Minorities arranged a night for the minorities ( Zorasteans, Jewish, Armenians, and Assyrians) to honor the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in the main performing arts center of the country, with each displaying their ethnic music. In short, our choir had the least members (13) compared to some choirs that had more than 50 singers. Likewise, our attire was very simple and not even comparable to other minorities. Before the show the members were somewhat discouraged, but Rabi Khofri, with his extraordinary kindness and encouraging voice of wisdom, made us very confident prior to our turn. In the end, our performance was at a much higher level than that of any other minority group; none of the other choirs could compete with it. I remember that backstage the conductor of the Armenian Choir told us that Rabi Khofri was one of his music teachers in Abadan, and the conductor of the Jewish Choir came to Rabi Khofri and asked him to have a performance in their cultural center. The next day the only photograph of the ceremony in the newspaper showed our choir; the only song from the ceremony that got broadcast on national radio was our song, composed by Rabi Khofri and performed by his choir.
Rabi Polous Khofri’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all those whose lives had been touched by him. He will remain a shining star in the history of our art and music for ever and ever!

Dennis was born in Abadan and raised in Tehran, Iran. He is a graduate of Alborz High School and Tehran University Medical School. After graduation he worked as a general practitioner in various settings in Mahshahr and Tehran. In 1995 he along with his wife Valantine, and his daughter, Eilrayna immigrated to the United States of America. He got his Masters degree in Public Health in Community Health Sciences from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); and finished his residency in Psychiatry at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Illinois. During his residency he got several awards including being elected to membership at Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He currently is a faculty member at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine as well as being in private practice as a board certified psychiatrist in Illinois.
Dennis was an active member of Assyrian Evangelical Church Youth group during his high school years in Tehran, Iran. After the Islamic revolution he was selected by the Assyrian Tehran Association (Moutwa) to be a founding member of the Assyrian National and Cultural Youth Center (Qhendroun). That Youth center during 80s and 90s turned to be one of the most prominent groups that brought together younger Assyrians from different backgrounds to learn from experts and scholars of the community about their literature, culture, art, and history. The center helped the youth to believe in their potential and in the power of their unity. The outcome was outstanding activities, some at incredible high levels with endorsements from many organizations and churches. Dennis after Immigration to the United States has been active as youth counselor in different local Assyrian Churches in California and Illinois.

The Tears of William Daniel
Recently Professor Edward Odisho sent us a video recorded in Chicago at Loyola University in 1986. This was an event held by Assyrian Academic Society in Honor of Rabi William Daniel. What was striking in this video was the "Tears of William Daniel" while he listens to recital of Qateeni poems in their original form in Tyari Assyrian dialect by Dr. Odisho. We think watching William Daniel crying in this video is a life changing experience for those of us who have passion for our culture and are determined to preserve and expand the Assyrian cultural heritage.
Dr. Odisho in his email to us writes:
"I should say that you are doing a fascinating and creative service which I admire ... I want your activities to be superbly successful because they are original and more or less unprecedented"

Victor Davoody supports Mesopotamian Night 2009

GILGAMESH: The Oratorio

Gilgamesh, the Sumerian epic, has inspired scores of novels, plays and operas. One such work, the Assyrian opera Gilgamesh by John Craton and a work still in progress, is sung in Aramaic, the language of the Assyrians. Now comes the Assyrian oratorio Gilgamesh, another work in progress, by the Reverend Samuel Khangaldy.
An oratorio more often is a choral work based on a religious theme but not part of the official church service. The Messiah by Handel is a good example. There are secular oratorios, as well, Rev. Khangaldy points out, such as Semele by Handel and Liverpool Oratorio by former Beatle Paul McCartney.
Gilgamesh Oratorio falls in the latter group. Thus far only the overture from it is completed. “It will be written in 15 parts and cover the whole Epic of Gilgamesh,” he says.
Rev. Khangaldy’s original text is based on four English versions of Gilgamesh (10 have been published) as well as two Assyrian and a Farsi. “I will have my own sentencing and words in adopting the lyrics for Gilgamesh,” he explains, “and will do my best to stay close to Rabi Eddy Alkhas’ translation and be in tune with the other versions.”
Rev. Khangaldy’s Gilgamesh will have two separate lyrics, in Assyrian and in English, to be sung separately, he notes. “I hope some day this piece will be performed for a non-Assyrian audience and I want it to be understandable for them as well,” he adds.
Keeping up his religious duties as well as teaching piano forces Rev. Khangaldy to work on the oratorio in his spare time. Based on that schedule, he assumes the 90-minute long Gilgamesh will take him about two years to complete.
No matter, for the Assyrians need every work of art produced that we can call our own, regardless of how long it takes to create it. We have been around for ages and are a patient people, especially for something worthwhile.
